Compounded T3/T4 combines liothyronine and levothyroxine in one prescription preparation. You may also see it called T4/T3, a thyroid combination capsule, or “lio/levo.” The ingredient names matter more than their order: T3 refers to liothyronine, and T4 refers to levothyroxine.
If you are researching the combination because you still feel tired on thyroid treatment, start with a review of your current prescription, symptoms and laboratory results. This guide explains the medication choices and the questions worth taking to that appointment. Rebody’s compounded T3/T4 care page lists our capsule options, packages and online visit details.
What are T3 and T4?
T4, or thyroxine, is the main hormone released by the thyroid gland. The body converts T4 into T3, the more active thyroid hormone. Levothyroxine is the medication form of T4; liothyronine is the medication form of T3. These hormones help regulate energy use, temperature and the function of several organs. American Thyroid Association: thyroid hormone treatment.
| Name on the prescription | Hormone | What the name tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Levothyroxine | T4 | One thyroid-hormone ingredient |
| Liothyronine | T3 | A different thyroid-hormone ingredient |
| Liothyronine + levothyroxine | T3 + T4 | Both ingredients in the prescribed treatment |
The abbreviation “lio/levo” is informal shorthand. A prescription should identify the actual ingredients and formulation. A slash between two names does not explain the product’s release characteristics or make it interchangeable with another capsule.
What does compounded thyroid medication mean?
A compounding pharmacy prepares a medication for a patient’s prescription. Compounding can address a medical need that an available approved product does not meet, such as a particular formulation or an ingredient that needs to be avoided. The reason should be specific to the person and product. FDA: compounding questions and answers.
“Compounded” describes how the medication is prepared. It is not a certification of better symptom relief. Useful questions include which ingredients the prescription contains, what the capsule’s release description means, and why that preparation was selected.
Rebody offers compounded, sustained-release capsules containing both T4 and T3. Four formulations are available in 30- or 90-capsule packages. The product page shows the current choices; a clinician confirms the prescription.
How does a combination compare with levothyroxine alone?
Levothyroxine is the standard treatment for hypothyroidism. Some people continue to report symptoms during treatment, which has prompted research into adding liothyronine. A joint American, British and European thyroid-association consensus document reported that 14 clinical trials had not shown a consistent benefit from T4/T3 combination therapy. 2021 consensus document.
That research concerns combination therapy broadly. It does not establish that a particular compounded sustained-release capsule produces better outcomes than an approved medication. A consultation should connect the proposed change to your diagnosis, current treatment and a way to assess the result.
Persistent fatigue deserves attention even when a blood-test result is within its reference range. It does not, by itself, identify the cause or show that adding T3 is the answer. The American Thyroid Association describes fatigue, cold intolerance, constipation and other symptoms as clues that need to be considered alongside testing. Hypothyroidism overview.
Is compounded T3/T4 the same as two separate prescriptions?
The active ingredients can be the same, while the finished products differ. Separate levothyroxine and liothyronine products remain two medications. A compounded combination brings both into one preparation, with its own ingredient amounts, inactive ingredients and release characteristics.
This distinction is useful when gathering records: bring the full medication names and the prescription label, rather than describing everything as “thyroid medicine.” Your clinician needs to identify the existing preparation before evaluating another one. Medication changes and directions belong with that clinician.
Is it the same as Armour or desiccated thyroid?
Desiccated thyroid extract is made from animal thyroid tissue and contains both T4 and T3. A compounded preparation made with liothyronine and levothyroxine is a different product. The presence of both hormones does not make the products equivalent. American Thyroid Association.
Words such as “natural,” “bioidentical” and “custom” are not enough to identify a medication. The prescription’s ingredients and formulation give you something concrete to discuss with the prescriber.
Where does Hashimoto’s fit?
Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune condition that can damage the thyroid and lead to hypothyroidism. Thyroid-hormone replacement treats the resulting hormone deficiency. A positive antibody result can also occur while thyroid function remains normal; that is a different clinical situation. American Thyroid Association: Hashimoto’s.
This is why an article about autoimmune activity and a page about replacement medication answer different questions. Our LDN and Hashimoto’s guide and peptide research review examine those separate topics.
What should an online thyroid consultation cover?
Before comparing telehealth services, check what their clinical team needs and what the advertised package includes. For a useful appointment, gather:
- Your thyroid diagnosis and relevant treatment history.
- Your current prescription label and previous medication changes.
- Available laboratory reports, including their dates and reference ranges.
- The symptoms that remain and when they changed.
- Your other medicines, supplements and relevant health history.
Ask how missing or additional tests are handled, where clinical questions go, and what follow-up is available. A service’s public page should distinguish the medication package from laboratory testing. It should also explain how to contact the care team after delivery.
At Rebody, the displayed thyroid package includes the standard online consultation, medication if prescribed and shipping. Additional laboratory testing is separate. The patient portal provides access to the care team and future order or renewal management. See current thyroid package details.
Safety and FDA status
Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. FDA does not review their safety, effectiveness or quality before marketing. The approval status of an individual ingredient does not extend to a compounded combination. FDA.
Excess thyroid hormone can affect the heart and bones. Your clinician needs to know about heart conditions, pregnancy or pregnancy plans, other medicines and any symptoms during treatment. The prescribing clinician provides all medication directions. American Thyroid Association.
For a damaged shipment, missing medication or a label question, contact the care team through your patient account. Clinical questions should reach the prescriber who can review your record.
Questions about compounded T3/T4
Can I get compounded T3/T4 through telehealth?
An online clinician can evaluate whether a prescription is appropriate, subject to eligibility and service availability. Rebody’s thyroid page offers the online visit entry and current capsule packages. Choosing a formulation preference is part of the request; it does not create a prescription.
Does sustained-release mean it works better?
Sustained-release describes a formulation characteristic. It does not establish a better clinical result. Ask the prescriber why the proposed preparation is relevant to your treatment and how the outcome will be assessed.
Is a three-month package billed monthly?
Rebody’s three-month option is prepaid as a package. Its monthly equivalent helps compare prices; the package selector shows the actual charge and future package total. Review the selected term rather than assuming a monthly price means monthly billing.
Can I choose a formula based on an online comparison?
The clinician determines the treatment and final prescription. Use comparisons to understand the product names and prepare questions about your existing care.
